Understanding the NDIS — Everything You Need to Know

Navigating the National Disability Insurance Scheme can feel overwhelming. At Good Doers, we help you understand your NDIS plan, access your funding, and connect with the right supports — simply and stress-free.

What is the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is the Australian Government’s program that provides funding and support to people living with a permanent and significant disability. Launched in 2013 and now covering all of Australia, the NDIS gives eligible participants greater choice and control over the supports they receive.

Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, the NDIS funds personalised support packages tailored to each participant’s specific needs, goals, and circumstances. This means you can choose your own service providers, decide how your funding is used, and actively shape the kind of life you want to live.

Age

Be under 65 years of age at the time of applying

Citizen

Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or Protected Special Category Visa holde

Permanent Disability

Have a permanent disability that significantly impacts your ability to participate in everyday activities

Require support

Require supports that are likely to be needed for the rest of your life

Who is Eligible for the NDIS?

To be eligible for the NDIS, you must:

If you are unsure about your eligibility, Good Doers can help you understand your options and guide you through the access request process.

How Does NDIS Funding Work?

Once you are approved as an NDIS participant, you will receive a personalised NDIS plan. Your plan outlines your goals and the funding allocated to help you achieve them. NDIS funding is divided into three support categories:

1. Core Supports

Funding for everyday activities and supports, including personal care, assistance with household tasks, and community participation.

2. Capacity Building Supports

Funding designed to help you build skills and increase your independence over time, such as therapy, education, and employment support.

3. Capital Supports

Funding for significant assistive technology, home modifications, or specialist disability accommodation

How Are NDIS Plans Managed?

NDIS participants can choose how they manage their funding:

  • NDIA-Managed: The NDIA pays providers directly on your behalf
  • Plan-Managed: A registered plan manager handles the financial administration for you
  • Self-Managed: You manage your own funding and pay providers directly

Good Doers works with participants across all three management types. No matter how your plan is managed, we are here to provide the support you need.
